What are people's favourite foreign films?

Together, or 'Tillsammans', if you will
Despite containing the themes of wife-beating, loneliness and infidelity, this is easily the most warm-hearted film I have ever seen and it makes me cry every time I see it. And I don't even feel shameful and dirty when I cry, like when I do it against my will whilst watching something shit such as Snow Dogs.

Oldboy
I hope everyone in the class has seen this.

101 Reykjavík
Mostly because I think it'd be excellent to live in Iceland. With my mother. Mmmm.....mmmmmother.

In The Mood For Love
I got this free with The Times the other week. Free! (Downside: I had to buy The Times.)

(First person to point out that - haha! - American films are foreign films! wins my best contemptuous scowl (it's a proven killer).
Le sigh

If you're watching Oldboy, Abdou, surely you might as well recommend all 3 parts of the Vengeance triology?

Sympathy for Mr Vengeance, Oldboy, and Lady Vengeance. Though I've not seen Lady Vengeance, so I feel like a fraud, know it'll be excellent.

I'm also ordering the 3 Colours boxset, another excellent foreign trilogy!

I bought the Infernal Affairs trilogy, but have yet to watch 2 or 3...
I hope you like the Christmas present I sent you and your wife.

I didn't want to use them all up in one go. Lady Vengeance is good - there are lots of parallels to Oldboy, but done well, rather than in a way which makes you think, "Hmmm... that's just a rip-off of his own film!"

I have not seen the Three Colours trilogy, due to my aversion to ubiquity, which only hurts myelf in the end, so maybe I'll pick them up from Fopp.

I have seen Infernal Affairs 1 and 3 - both are superb.

Ah!
Mmmm...

Well, Zatoichi is excellent. And I like Nikita, mainly for the woman who I am in love with. I also like Blondes on Fire for the bit where she slurps man melm off a spoon.

I am yet to see that. I've heard it is good.

Has anyone seen a Russian film called 'The Return'? It might be the bleakest thing ever.

I thought 'Jean de Florette' was okay.

Am I allowed Jackie Chan films? All of those, basically. And Triumph des Willens of course.

Nightwatch was good, but it felt to me more like a TV pilot than a film. But then, they are making (have made?) a sequel.

The Son's Room (it was on BBC4 ages ago) was excellent, and probably one of the most moving films I've ever watched.

The Hairdresser's Husband.

Sometimes I really like french humour. See also: Taxi 1 & 2. BUT when I was in France earlier this year I told a french man a joke, in french, and he didn't get it. What an idiot.

I would tell you, but it is best to watch it without knowing a single thing about it (other than that it is very sad). I would not even read about it on IMDB.

Rashomon is a more interesting film to watch, but it's mostly just rape, and violence, and lying.

Seven Samurai has everything you could possibly want from a film. Action, romance, comedy, the human condition and rape*.

*does not contain rape

I saw this excellent Thai film called Born to Fight, when I was in Sweden.

It was basically about a load of young Thai olympic athletes and sportspeople, who go to take an aid package to a remote village and encourage the kids to do sports, and then get caught up in some crazy general's military coup. And then they fight the fuck out of the soldiers, using their respective sports skills.

My favourate bit was when the footballer took a run up an abandoned cart, leapt up to the height of a coconut tree, and booted a coconut into a rifle-toting soldier's face.

Oh man. I've seen this.

Some wonderful Pele kicking of hand grenades takes place.

The best bit in Oldboy is where he picks up the hammer and it all becomes a gruesome game of Streets of Rage.

I've got Oldboy and Lady Vengeance recorded on media centre from Film 4. For some reason the haven't shown Mr Vengeance though.

Or maybe they have and I've cretinously missed it. Anyway. Don't spiol them!

God, I fucking love Versus. It's probably my favourite foreign film. It makes every other film on the planet seem shitty and dull.

However, I got Baise Moi the other day, and it was dreadful. It tried to be Bonnie and Clyde but it was just gay. Not even the vaguely explicit shots of ladies vagina's could make it good.

I want to see that, Hellboy was good, but the Devil's Backbone was even better, so I hope it's some sort of wonderful fusion of both varieties of excellences.
